What exactly is a iPhone SE?

iPhone SE stands for iPhone Special Edition. Currently, there are three other Special Edition models available. These SE models use the same A9 CPU and graphics processor as the iPhone 6s but with a smaller 4" screen. In addition to this, possibly the most notable fact of the SE phones is that these phones still offer the Home Button, whereas current iPhone smartphones don't.

Because of these differences, the SE phones are a lot cheaper. Essentially, the Apple SE range is the budget version of the Apple phones.

Will there be a 4th generation iPhone SE?

The next budget model to be released in the Apple series is the Apple iPhone SE 4. Apple has barely given anything away for this new phone, which is a shock, usually by now we've heard at least one confirmed rumour or seen a couple leaked images, but Apple seems to have it well under wraps. But that won't stop keen Apple fans from making speculations.

Some rumours online have speculated the phone will have a 6" OLED display, Face ID, a USB-C port, and a single 48MP rear camera. Most talk is based around the SE 4's possible 6" screen size. The SE 3 and SE 2 both had a 4.7" screen size, so bumping the SE 4 up to a 6" would be a great improvement.

Online rumours have also stated that the SE 4 will be ditching that iconic Home Button we mentioned earlier. This would be the first SE model to remove the home button, the SE 3 and SE 2 were released with home buttons despite coming from an era where the iPhone had already begun removing their home buttons.

When was the iPhone 4 SE release date?

Now onto the most important factor for the new iPhone SE 4, it's release date and possible price. At the current time of writing (12th February 2025), there's been no official news when the SE 4 will be released. There's been rumours we could see it within the next couple of weeks. Previously, the SE 3 was released in March 2022, so a release date in a couple of weeks' time would match up with their previous release date, making it very likely.

  • iPhone SE 3 - March 2022
  • iPhone SE 2 - April 2020
  • iPhone SE - March 2016

Looking at price, the iPhone 16 Pro which was released in 2024 jumped up in price by £50 compared to the iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max also jumped up in price by £150 compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max! If Apple follows this slight increase, we could see the SE 4 pricing at around £450-£500. Remember, the SE models are budget options, so it isn't strange for the phone to be priced so much lower.

Our opinions:

We think the Apple SE 4 has some promising features that will allow it to be a success. For example, it's screen size upgrade, however... there's one factor we can't overlook.

We think Apple should keep the home button on their new SE model. Even though it would be great to switch up the design of the phone, the home button is now considered 'unique' because so many other tech companies have ditched the button.

A lot of people also prefer the home button, so removing it could close off a big audience. Because the SE models are aimed at people who aren't as reliant on tech, are looking for a cheap option or want a phone that's easy to use, taking this home button off could in fact make the phone harder to use for some people. Removing that home button will turn the SE model into the iPhone Mini-series, which Apple discontinued in 2023.

Pros: Cons:
  • Cheap, great quality
  • Touch ID
  • Design feels dated
