PS5 or Xbox Series X? Which takes the Spotlight?

Lewis Rice |

A common question asked by a lot of people online is, which is better the PlayStation or the Xbox? This question is especially more relevant with the recent release of the rare, yet highly rated PS5 and Xbox Series X.

In this blog, we will go over many of the key point and features you need to look out for when choosing between these new consoles.

 Blog roundup:

  • PS5 console is great for playing high-quality games and offers a unique interface.

  • Xbox Series X has a top of the line processor with impressive backwards compatibility.

PlayStation 5:

The Sony PlayStation 5 released on the 12th of November in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, North America, and South Korea. World-wide release was on the 19th of November 2020. Upon release, the PS5 costed around £449 in the UK, and boasted some extraordinary features. Due to its popularity, the PS5 ran out of stock very quickly. Leading to it becoming quite rare to come across. The PS5 released with two versions, the normal version, and a digital version which cost around £360 on release.

Key features:

Boasting some impressive specifications, the Sony PS5 is popular for a good reason. Starting with its top tier processor. Allowing you to experience the pinnacle of gaming with an astonishing CPU that contains 8 custom Zen 2 cores that run at 3.5GHz and an exceptional GPU that is made up of 36 CUs running at 2.23GHz and 10.28 teraflops of phenomenal performance.

Next on our list is the extremely important storage and memory components. Similarly, to most consoles, the main storage for the PS5 is included internally (so you don’t have to worry about it). The internal storage is a custom 825GB solid state drive (SSD), which provides plenty of space for any games you want to install. If that isn’t enough space for you, then you do have potential to expand your storage space with an external hard drive thanks to the PS5’s NVME SSD slot. Not to forget about the brilliant memory of the PS5 as well, containing a 16GB GDDR6 along with a memory bandwidth of 448GB/S.

Graphics:

One of the most important parts of the PS5 is the quality of the graphics, which is not an issue with the PS5. The PS5 has some phenomenal graphics, allowing you to have resolutions up to 8k. The phenomenal graphics are only improved by the performance of the PS5, allowing an astonishing performance of 120 FPS maximum. If you have the original version of the PS5 then you can experience the best quality physical games and Blu-Ray discs through the optical drive.

Controller:

A brand-new console is always made far better with the presence of a brand-new controller, and the PS5 DualSense controller does not disappoint. Improving massively on the PS4 DualShock controllers. Including new features such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Both of these features can be altered by game developers for the games they make, allowing you to gain a far more exciting and powerful experience. Haptic feedback allows you to feel games and their details through the vibrations in your controller. Adaptive triggers change the resistance of the triggers in different points of a game, allowing your experience to feel more real and more interesting when using different weapons or experience different events. It is also extremely important to note that PS4 controllers can be used on the PS5, but only for PS4 games.

Games:

The most important part of a new game console, are the games that are available for you to play. There are plenty of games to play on PS5 that do not disappoint. Including games from Demon Souls to Marvel’s Spiderman: Miles Morales, there are many games available to play, with more to release over time. Along with backwards compatibility, allowing you to play PS4 games on the PS5, and the new PlayStation Plus Collection, allowing access to 20 highly rated games if are a PlayStation Plus member.

Xbox Series X:

The Xbox Series X released world-wide on November 10th 2020 and for the price of £449 on release day. Along with the PS5, the Xbox Series X is extremely popular, making it difficult to purchase due to lack of stock. Along with the Xbox Series X, Microsoft released a cheaper, but less powerful, Xbox Series S. This cost around £249 on launch day.

Key features:

The Xbox Series X is vastly superior when it comes to some of its specifications. With an extraordinary processor that makes it over twice as strong as the Xbox One X. The processor boasts an extraordinary custom Zen 2 CPU that contains 8 cores that run at 3.8GHz, along with a brilliant custom RDNA 2 GPU that has a phenomenal 12 teraflops of top-tier performance and 52 CUs that run at 1.825GHz.

One of the major parts of the Xbox Series X is the mighty strong storage and memory which it holds. Within the console is an extremely fast custom internal NVME SSD that contains 1 terabyte of storage for you to install any games you want, and load those games as fast as possible. If 1 terabyte isn’t enough for you, then you can boost your storage with an exclusive Seagate Expansion Card for Xbox Series X, that matches the internal SSD exactly. This is not included with the Xbox Series X however. The memory of the Xbox Series X is also super impressive, including a phenomenal 16GB GGDR6 SDRAM that gives you a memory bandwidth that hits a peak of 10GB/s at 560GB/s.

Graphics:

One of the greatest parts of the Xbox Series X is the top-tier video capabilities it allows. Allowing you to play games online at a glorious 4k resolution, and so experiencing a brilliant quality of online gaming. You can also achieve a stunning 8k resolution thanks to the Xbox Series X’s brilliant HDR. These resolutions are made even better with the Xbox Series X’s ability to perform at 120 FPS, making your game or entertainment look and feel even better. Whether it’s a game or a Blu-Ray DVD you can play or watch with the highest quality, thanks to the extraordinary graphics and presence of an optical drive.

One of the greatest features of the Xbox Series X is its ability to access and use games and hardware from previous consoles. Allowing you to play games all the way back from the Xbox 360, and use controllers and headsets that are compatible with the Xbox One. Thanks to this, you do not have to spend more on updated electronic devices and accessories that you already have for a previous console. On the topic of using controllers, the Xbox Series X does come with a new designed controller. Although the features on this controller and quite similar to the Xbox One controllers, it is still an upgrade. Including a new share button, textured triggers and bumpers and a circle pad, there are some features that will bring up your level of gameplay.

The involvement of new features are extremely for a release of a new console, and the Xbox Series X has good few features to improve your experienceA couple of new features included are: quick resume (pause your games and resume when you want), smart delivery (buy games that will update to the highest quality when improving console tier), full backwards compatibility (as mentioned before) and more to explore

Video Games:

The main part to all gaming consoles are the games that are available once you purchase the console. Although the Xbox Series X did not release with the greatest variety of exclusive games, it does have a lot of high potential games coming up, and does allow access to games from previous consoles. That way, there is always lots for you to enjoy and games for you to experience whether they released multiple years ago or are soon to release. The Xbox Ultimate Game Pass improves your experience even further, granting you access to all benefits of Xbox Live Gold and hundreds of games to experience.

So, which is the greater?

In the end, both the Xbox Series X and the PS5 are immense consoles that gamers will enjoy to a high level. With both consoles having similar prices, audio systems and a few more features, it is hard to say which is definitely better as both succeed in many ways. With the PS5, you have access to a phenomenal controller, a great variety of enjoyable and high-quality games, a new unique interface and more. However, the Xbox Series X has some superior features, like a top-of-the-line processor, the ability to experience backwards compatibility to a huge level, great storage and memory and even more.

Ultimately, the winner is what you are looking for within a console. As both are incredibly unique and have features that will appeal to different people.
