Will Apple make robots?

After we briefly mentioned Apple’s latest project, the Apple Robot, in one of our previous blogs we thought it would be a good idea to explore the project further and provide you with a place to check back to whenever we have new updates. So let’s go through what we know already about The Apple Robot.

Currently, we have very little information on this project, and almost all information in this blog is based on rumours and outside sources. Please note, that not everything in this blog is 100% confirmed.

The project was first mentioned by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman that Apple reportedly are looking for their ‘next big thing’, after the failure of the Apple Car Project, and it seems like robots are the approach they are taking with it.

Nicknamed by Apple fans as the iRobot, the Apple engineering teams have been allegedly working on various in-home personal robots and AI software that would help make work around the house that much easier. Apple mentioned that when they cancelled the electric cars because they wanted to focus much more on their AI advances in their tech, so was this what they meant?

What robots are Apple releasing?

There are talks of Apple releasing two iRobots that will help around the house named the Mobile Robot and Table-Top Robot, let’s explore these further.

  • Mobile robot – This little device would follow users around the home and work like an iPad or Alexa on wheels. It would be able to make Facetime calls, monitor the home and who’s in it, answer your questions and many more features. That is the initial concept but by using AI in the future, the iRobot would be able to navigate through cluttered spaces in the home whilst being able to clean up basic things around the house. Considering this type of AI tech has never been done before we assume this will take some development.
  • Table-Top Robot – The second robot has been described as an ‘advanced table-top home device’, it would be a robot motor on a small stand that would mimic the head movements of a person on a Facetime call so when you talk to someone virtually, it will feel like you’re in the room with them. The device would nod, lock onto specific people in a call and practically make Facetime chats that much easier.

Out of the two, it is believed that we are likely to see the Table-Top option release first with the Mobile Robot being unlikely to be revealed within the next decade, claimed Gurman.

When with the Apple robot be released?

So whilst it may feel like we have plenty of information on the iRobot already, its future still hangs in the balance. The project hasn’t even been officially announced, so it is unlikely we will see further movement on this within the next few years. We guess that production of the Apple Robot will begin within the next 5-10 years (if it even goes ahead), and we will receive frequent updates on the tech’s production as time goes on.

Again though, it is still unclear if the iRobot will even go ahead. If it’s anything like the Apple Car Project there is a possibility that the project won’t go ahead at all.

Conclusion:

We will make sure to regularly update this blog page with further information when it is released. Although we don’t expect to hear much from Apple for a while on this project, we hope more is revealed at the annual WWDC and Apple events about what is happening when it comes to working on the project.
