Comparing The Android XR Headset And Apple Vision Pro

Comparing The Android XR Headset And Apple Vision Pro

Charlotte Bolton |

After the new Android XR Headset was announced by Samsung in December 2024, people had only one question. How will it perform in comparison to the Apple Vision Pro? We all know the almighty failure of the Vision Pro, how can Samsung ensure this doesn't happen again? Let's compare what we know about the Android XR Headset with what we already know about the Apple Vision Pro and see how they will differ.

Android XR Vs Apple Vision Pro:

Android XR stands for Extended Reality; the headset will work very similar to the Apple Vision Pro which we know because it's been nicknamed 'Vision Pro upcoming competitor'. The headset has been created by Samsung and Google in a joint partnership to create an 'Android headset'. Both of these companies individually have plenty of experience within the AI industry. Samsung released their VR headset called the Samsung VR Gear Headset in 2015 and Google released their Google Glass Smart glasses in 2014. With the Android XR releasing in mid-late 2025 (allegedly) we don't know what its main use will 100% be, we can only guess. We've been given a couple of insider leaks that it will have Google Gemini AI features and take an open-end platform approach. Finally, we don't know what the confirmed price for the model will be, but we know it will be significantly below the £3500 price tag of the Apple Vision Pro! The Vision Pro price tag was inevitably the reason why the Apple headset was such a failure; it would be stupid for Samsung to make the same mistake.

On the other hand, Apple had virtually no experience with AI when they released the Vision Pro. They had never created smart glasses, rings, gaming headsets, or VR headsets. They only incorporated Apple Artificial Intelligence into their smartphone recently, two years behind Google and Samsung and their artificial intelligence was met with a lot of negative feedback. When announced, the Vision Pro was described as a 'spatial computer', which would allow users to bring their computer and smartphone into the real world, integrating it with day-to-day living spaces. Users can make calls, play video games, watch movies and organise files. What's better, it has a transparent lens so if you're working on the go it's easy to commute and work in one. However, despite these incredible features, the price of the headset was simply too much for people, so Apple fans lost interest. In late 2024, the headset production was completely halted, less than a year after it was originally released.

Conclusion:

We can only hope that the Android XR Headset isn't a let down like the Vision Pro. With over a year since the Vision Pro was released, Samsung has plenty of time to spot the mistakes of the Vision Pro and fix those problems with their upcoming headset.
